Researchers have discovered what is now confirmed as the oldest object on Earth.
Jon Valley a Geochemist and metamorphic petrology professor at the University Of Wisconsin Madison led a group of researchers. John Valley and his team found the Zircon crystal in Australia’s jack hills, north of Perth Australia. The zircon crystal was found in 2001.
According to www.foxnews.com the zircon crystal is 4.4 billion years old. Making it the oldest thing on earth found.
The zircon rock measures at only 400 Micrometers. The small fragment is only about as big as four strands of human hair.
Zircon is the December birthstone. Zircon is also a gem that is typically brownish red but can turn blue when exposed to electrons. The gem has a vast variety of colors.
According to the site web elements zircon is composed of a chemical compound called Zirconium Silicate. Zircon is a very strong, hard dense rock.
The oldest zircon gems are found in Australia's where they have been found to be 4.4 billion years old. John Valley said "what we’ve learned is that earth’s crust cooled a lot more quickly than people had thought. The surface formed a crust much more quickly than people had thought".
Research is allowing scientist to believe that Earth’s temperature could have possibly supported life 4.4 billion years ago.
